Mother's Day May 10, 2009 - We decided to go see the Lava River Bed northwest of Flagstaff AZ. www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/recreation/peaks/lava Arizona Highways magazine May issue has a nice picture of the 30 foot high area of the cave www.arizonahighways.com along with directions. Driving there is mostly on dried up mud. From the parking lot we head out the short trail to the cave entrance which is marked by a circle of rocks. The descent is rugged and a bit steep. Carol goes down to the hanging ice using her flashlight to check each step as there is a lot of ice on the ground. Owen hangs behind. After checking out the 32 degree temperature and assessing our attire, we decide to come back another day with jeans and more than two flashlights - stay tuned!
